Plimoth Plantation was formed by Harry Hornblower in 1947 with the vision of offering a replica of the Mayflower and a recreated English village in Plymouth, Massachusetts. When it was learned that a group in Great Britain intended to build a functional replica of the ship and sail it to the United States as a gift to the American people, an alliance formed that offered a full set of construction drawings commissioned by Mr. Hornblower, to the project. The museum committed to take ownership of the ship upon its arrival in the United States in 1957, to maintain and display in perpetuity. Over the years the museum expanded to become a full living-history museum with an English village, a Wampanoag village and a 1636 replica functioning grist mill in addition to Mayflower 2. In 2020 the museum changed its name to Plimoth-Patuxet Museums to better reflect its status of portraying both the English and Wampanoag roles in the Pilgrim story. The museum is considered the preeminent authority on the Pilgrim story and has broadened its program capability to include virtual programs for distant audiences.
